About batik-work
The ancient batik-making process was invented in Indonesia, (probably on the island of Java) around the 7th century. ‘Batik’ is derived from a Javanese word, meaning ‘to draw’.
A fountain pen-like tool containing molten wax is used to make intricate designs onto fabric. The wax repels the application of dyes and creates a pattern. This ‘wax-resist’ technique allows many colours to be used, as the fabric is dyed multiple times. The most intricate and expensive batiks can take several months to make. Antique examples of traditional batik-work are highly-sought by textile collectors and museums. UNESCO recognises traditional batik-work as being of important social and historical relevance, as the motifs used in their designs, along with the manufacturing skills passed down the generations, contribute vastly to the written and oral history of Indonesia.
