Antique Carved Elephants Occasional Table

This antique, hand-carved table comes from Myanmar, (formerly Burma) and was made circa 1890 – 1910. The oval top features a wonderful running frieze of delicately worked flowers and vines around a central panel depicting an elephant with banana and pineapple motifs. The table top edge is a particular delight; with a repeated floral pattern and carved scalloped fringing.

The four legs take the form of noble elephant heads with bone tusks. Their trunks, (each one holding a pineapple!) extend downwards to form the table legs, while the stretchers terminate in a central pool with four rearing cobras. Almost every inch of this remarkable piece of furniture is decorated – even the underside of the stretchers have been carved with leaf and vine detailing.

The table is in good, useable condition. It bears traces of a few (minor) repairs and has some surface marking/rubbing, commensurate with its age.

Dimensions: Height: 62 cms. Width: 76 cms. Depth: 53 cms.

Construction: Hardwood, (unknown) with bone details.
